Drenochrome ever since hiding places I wanted to hear more Kenny Segal and Billy woods. I never though it would happen and yet... here we are, now do I think this tops hiding places? no I do not but do I think this is a fantastic album with some really great moments? absolutely, having Billy on the same song as Aesop Rock + another on with Danny Brown, its something I did not expect but man am I happy it happened. overall this project is pretty good just not as good as the last. Favorite track: Babylon by Bus featuring ShrapKnel.

thepirc A masterpiece by all accounts. woods continues to operate at not just the top of his game, but the top of the game period. His pairing with Kenny Segal is Jordan and Pippen-esque. Favorite track: Baby Steps featuring ELUCID & Benjamin Booker.

zhangtastic The cynical, cold bars next to these colorful, tasty beats. This jazzy hip hop album is killer. Favorite track: Babylon by Bus featuring ShrapKnel.

Maps is the new album from NYC rapper billy woods and LA producer Kenny Segal, their first full collaboration since 2019’s Hiding Places. Four years after that landmark record, the duo have reunited with a vengeance. Maps is a story of the road, or roads, taken and untaken; of living the dream and dreaming of another life. It is an album about trying to find your way home, after making your home wherever you lay your head.

“Kenny and I made more songs together before Hiding Places than we did after,” woods says. “I think we only collaborated once over the last four years and although we didn’t talk about it, I think we wanted to let that energy build again. Neither of us wanted to make Hiding Places 2. We needed to go on other journeys, artistic and otherwise, to come back and do something fresh.”

Produced in full by Kenny Segal, Maps features Danny Brown, ELUCID (Armand Hammer), Shabaka Hutchins, Sam Herring (Future Islands), Quelle Chris, Aesop Rock, Benjamin Booker, and ShrapKnel. Segal moves effortlessly through styles but everything is underpinned with deep basslines and mean drums laid down like railroad tracks. Weaving between poignant memoir, deadpan humor, and incandescent bursts of surrealism, Maps cements both artists’ place amongst the best of their time.

I'd love to hear more collaborations with El-P in the future. The closing verse by woods on "The Gods Must Be Crazy" is one of my favorites on the project. Also, fuck Henry Kissinger! Glad that bastard is finally dead I respectfully disagree with Fantano. I think both of the Junglepussy features fit perfectly well. I also enjoyed the woodwinds on this project a lot.
